Brain Tumours Online is a national digital platform supporting Australians affected by brain tumours with trusted information, digital self-care tools, and a supportive online community. Co-designed with patients, carers, clinicians, and digital health experts, it was launched in late 2024.
This case study explores the strategic and design enhancements made to the platform to improve the user experience, strengthen engagement, and support its continued growth as a trusted national resource.
Strategy
The existing Learn, Connect, and Toolbox structure, developed through an extensive co-design process, remained fit for purpose. Rather than redesigning the experience, the focus was on modernising the platform to improve sustainability, reduce operating costs, strengthen accessibility and SEO, and create a more flexible foundation for future growth. The website was migrated from Strapi to WordPress, providing a more cost-effective, secure and maintainable CMS without compromising performance or scalability. Existing integrations with Mighty Networks, Humanitix, REDCap, Vimeo, and Mailchimp were retained, ensuring continuity while enabling ongoing enhancement based on user feedback and evaluation.

Deliverables
- CMS migration – Migrated the platform from Strapi to WordPress, improving maintainability, reducing vendor costs, and supporting long-term scalability.
- Navigation review – Refined navigation through user research, content review, improved information architecture, and guided pathways to help users find relevant content more easily.
- Visual enhancements – Introduced icons, thumbnails and structured content templates to improve readability and make text-heavy content easier to scan.
- SEO optimisation – Conducted keyword research and on-page optimisation to improve search visibility and strengthen the site’s organic performance.
- Accessibility improvements – Enhanced accessibility across the platform while maintaining the existing co-designed visual identity.
- Flexible content banner – Designed a CMS-managed banner system to promote webinars, events, and important updates.
